Anesthesia

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are extensively trained to safely and effectively administer anesthesia in an office setting. They have received training in anesthesia and pain control which is unique from any other specialty in the medical or dental fields. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have an excellent office anesthesia record and can provide a cost-effective service to their patients.

The efficacy of intravenous (IV) anesthesia techniques has been proven in nationwide studies conducted in recent years have demonstrated that these techniques are safe when used by oral and maxillofacial surgeons who have completed an accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program with formal training in anesthesiology.

Our office is skilled in the administration of any one of several levels of anesthesia and sedation. The procedures performed in our office may require levels of anesthesia which is based on the surgery and the preferences of the patient. Our Doctor will discuss your options with you to meet your particular surgical needs. The decision is yours.

Your surgery may be performed with local anesthesia (numbing), local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation (gas), oral sedation, intravenous sedation, or intravenous general anesthesia. Often, to achieve the optimum results a combination of both local anesthesia and intravenous sedation is used. The intravenous route allows our Doctor to tailor the level of sedation to the individual patient. Intravenous general anesthesia is given at the level where the patient has retained their reflexes of coughing, swallowing, and breathing.

Our Doctor uses the anesthesia monitors that are the state of the art and are found in operating rooms which use intravenous anesthesia.
